Its probably frowned upon but I'm not exactly sure how they would know unless you posted a thread on one of the most popular guild wars fansites. As long as you dont do that you should be fine.

Don't forget, as long as the thread title doesn't grab Gaile Grey's attention either.

Far as the rules go, all Guild War items (Vitual Items) belong to A.net... the people who created it. And while you don't want to trade for money like most people would, its still against the rules.

Items cannot be traded for anything outside of gameworld of Guild Wars. Plain and simple.

How would they ever know you traded it for another item? I give items to guildies or newbies on a regular basis. They don't ban me. If you feel you can trust the other person, just trade the things. Don't expect them to give you any help if the other player screws you over though.

Actually I believe there is actually a post somewhere from a dev that says Anet's primary concern is real money transfer, and that ingame item trades for other ingame items are just fine.

No it isn't. Don't state things which simply aren't true. The Terms of Service is clear... well not that anyone reads them:

Quote:
7. OFFICIAL SERVICE

The Game(s) is designed for official play only as offered through the Service by NC Interactive at the Web Site and not through any other means. You further agree not to access, create or provide any other means through which Game(s) may be played by others, as through server emulators. You agree not to use any hardware or software, including but not limited to third party tools, or any other method of support which may in any way influence or advantage your use of the Service which is not authorized by NC Interactive, including but not limited to the use of 'bots' and/or any other method by which the Service may be played automatically without human input. You acknowledge that you do not have the right to create, publish, distribute, create derivative works from or use any software programs, utilities, applications, emulators or tools derived from or created for the Game(s), except that you may use the Software to the extent expressly permitted by this Agreement. You may not take any action which imposes an unreasonable or disproportionately large load on our infrastructure. You may not sell or auction any Game(s) accounts, characters, items, coin or copyrighted material, nor may you assist others in doing so.
Take note of the stuff in Bold?

To the OP...

You can of course run the risk of doing the transaction in private, but don't go complaining here or anywhere else if you get banned for it.

Am I missing something, RTSFirebat? That says "You may not Sell or auction any blah blah. I'm not sure if I'm just being an idiot, but does Selling count as Trading?

Wait now, RTS, after reading that, I think that what the OP has in mind might actually be viable. It says "You may not sell or auction...", it says nothing about trade.

In fact, to further complicate things, wasn't Ninjakai's art contest for a game key okay'ed by Gaile? As in, it was perfectly fine with the EULA? If so, that was a trade out of game for a game account, which would normally be against the rules if it were in exchange for money.

Not to mention all the art commissions and contests held here on GURU, that's out-of-game trading for in-game gold and/or items. Why would it be any different if it were in-game items trade for a different game's in-game item? Sounds like a huge gray area to me.

An official word is in order, methinks.

oh I agree. But to me trading falls under the buying and selling of goods. And in truth if you trade something for something else you are selling / buying goods.

This of course is an example with the problem of stating rules and laws because people always find a way to get around the wording.

For me my 1500+ hours worth of gameplay is not worth risking.

The EULA falls short here to describe what they mean with sell. Actually if taken very strictly sellling in game would even be forbidden.

The major issue ANet is battling is commercial abuse of the game. The game does not suffer from small time trading of other virtual products. It may be dubious, and ANet can make decisions regarding them, buit the only thing that would be required here is to clarify the EULA.

Writing of legal and informative documents is not as easy as it seems, and it requires often others peoples input to improve. If not written correctly it will be misinterpreted, and thereby invalidate or undermine the statement. A law will collapse untill improvement, a scientific article will not be accepted etc.

We were having a debate about this a few days ago in Guild Chat.

Someone was saying they were thinking of selling there Diablo 2 character for guild wars gold. Not entirely sure if its against the rules set down by Anet exactly but i definatly wouldn't approve of it.

Think it was something completely stupid like 2million gold for 1 character... its f*cking ridiculous, personally i think people doing that sorta thing should be banned, gaining 2 million gold for something you did as fun on another game should be just as illegal as eBaying. Still means your money wasn't earnt, it was just given an insane trade rate...
